Strategic National’s first attempt to reclaim the party was using volunteers with pen and paper to run a voter identification and persuasion program for John Smietanka’s convention nomination contest for Michigan Attorney General in 1998 against the establishments’ pick Scott Romney, Mitt Romney’s brother.
Chuck Yob oversaw the campaign and Smietanka won the nomination because they put forward the better candidate and gave the delegates a real choice rather than a coronation. John was inspired by this outcome but knew there must be a more technologically advanced method of running a convention operation and researched emerging technologies and would help to pioneer this field in the coming decade.
